WHAT PARENTS CAN DO

Youth who drink are more likely to engage in other risky behaviors. The American Medical Association reports that they are more likely to fall behind in school, have increased social problems, depression, suicidal thoughts, and violence.

In Oregon, youth who drink are eight times more likely to smoke cigarettes and 10 times more likely to smoke marijuana. Nearly 1/4 of eighth grade girls who binge-drink report attempting suicide in the past year. Finally, 2/3 of eleventh grade boys who binge-drink, also gamble.
