EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ON YOUTH

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO

Youth who drink are more likely to engage in other risky behaviors. The American Medical Association reports that they are more likely to fall behind in school, have increased social problems, depression, suicidal thoughts, and violence.

In Oregon, youth who drink are eight times more likely to smoke cigarettes and 10 times more likely to smoke marijuana. Nearly 1/4 of eighth grade girls who binge-drink report attempting suicide in the past year. Finally, 2/3 of eleventh grade boys who binge-drink, also gamble.

Keep track of your alcohol supply. Notice a couple of beers missing from the fridge? Liquor watered down? If necessary, lock it up or keep it out of the house altogether.
Talk to other parents. You'll find that they share your concerns and making contact now makes it easier to connect later.
Know WHO your child hangs out with, WHAT they are doing, WHERE they will be and WHEN they will be home.
Establish clear rules. Don't make your kids guess your expectations.
Spend time together...doing activities that you child enjoys! You'll be amazed at how much you can learn from your kid(s).
